vegetable garden cookies

These garden cookies were inspired by this vegetable garden mini quilt featured at The Purl Bee last year. Dang, I wish I could sew. Yep, I don’t sew. I don’t garden either.

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the concept of gardening. I do, really, and I wish that I had knowledge of how things grow because it’s beautiful and fascinating. But it’s just not knowledge I retain. Worse, plants seem to whither when I merely walk past them. And if I ever know you, do NOT ask me to water your plants when you go out of town. I’ll try and water them, I will. But I’ll do something terribly wrong and you won’t come back to your plants. They will meet their fates early.

So I leave our yard to my husband who knows more because his mom knows everything there is to know about gardening.

Keeping plants safe and sound on cookies is more my speed I think.

To make these, I cut out 2 1/2 inch squares from my cookie dough. I prepared royal icing, tinted blue and brown with Americolor Soft Gel Pastes (Sky Blue and Chocolate Brown). Then I outlined and flooded the top half with blue and the bottom half with green, and let the cookies dry overnight. Next, I tinted some fondant with two shades of green, off-white, white, orange, red and purple. Then I rolled out the fondant and cut out shapes for the veggies. I adhered the veggies to the cookies with a little light corn syrup, and let them dry.

Pancake Party!! and I made garden decorated pancakes

So I got invited to a Pancake Party, and I didn’t even have to wear my PJs and slippers (though I wear these with stunning frequency, so I was probably wearing them when I made these pancakes). Rachel of Rachel Cooks is hosting a Pancake Party for all of July. Each day a different blogger will contribute a different, yummy pancake.  Be sure to visit Rachel Cooks this month to see all the fabulous pancake recipes and ideas from awesome bloggers!!

I made these pancakes back in APRIL!! And I’ve been dying to share them with you. I love participating in this kind of thing, because working outside my usual medium is always a fun challenge. I had to choose “decorated” pancakes, of course.

So I just applied my cookie decorating logic to the pancake, much as my four year old applies her own four year old logic to the unknown universe.  Like how on gray and cloudy days, both the sun and moon are sleeping.

The result? Now I’m hooked on decorated pancakes. When pancakes are treated like cookies… Oh, the possibilities!

For the step-by-step how-tos, click HERE to visit Rachel Cooks!!!

What pancakes will you be making??

easy Cheerios birdfeeders with printable instructions

Ever the supermom wannabe, I of course volunteered to help out with the Family Fun Day at my daughter’s school, even though we couldn’t attend said Family Fun Day due to a family event up in Jersey. The day was garden-themed. My tasks were to turn pieces of cardboard into signs and to come up with a make-your-own-birdfeeder idea.

wm.cheerio_birdfeeder4

First, look at my awesome signs. I’m pretty proud of these, which is why I’m posting a photo here even though it has no place in this blog post.

signs

Second, we made Cheerios birdfeeders. I thought about some alternatives first. I wanted to make birdseed ornaments, but every how-to I could find involved baking, which wasn’t going to happen with a line of kids on the school grounds. I thought about painting toilet paper rolls with honey and rolling them in birdseed, but imagine the mess 150 kids with honey could create. Not to mention some kids have sesame seed allergies. So a google search later and I decided on Cheerios birdfeeders. How did I miss that this existed? They are everywhere on google. Easy peasy, inexpensive supplies, limited mess, fitting for both the younger kids and older, and easy to tote around afterwards.

To make Cheerios birdfeeders…

you will need:*

Cheerios

pipe cleaners (younger kids)

floral wire (older kids)

instructions printable

*The Cheerios came from Costco. I also got these pipe cleaners and floral wire. I printed up these instructions. And I made a display be wrapping a Styrofoam block in green tissue paper and popping in a stick I got from the backyard. I also precut a bunch of pieces of yarn in case they wanted to add a bow to tie to their tree.  To make the spiral Cheerios, you can use a big marker for the mold or make a paper tube from cardstock.

wm.cheerio_birdfeeder2

how to make Cheerios birdfeeders:

older kids: To make a heart, thread Cheerios on a piece of floral wire, leaving about three inches on each end. Twist the wire ends together to form a circle. Make sure to twist the wire right at the end of the Cheerios so the Cheerios aren’t loose on the wire. Twist a loop with the wire ends. Bend the Cheerios on the wire into a heart shape. Thread yarn through the loop to hang to a tree. To make a spiral, thread a Cheerio on a piece of floral wire and wrap the end of the wire around to secure the Cheerio. Thread more Cheerios to fill the wire, leaving a couple inches at the top. Twist the wire at the top to secure the cheerios and make a loop. Bend the cheerio wire around the paper tube to make a spiral. Thread yarn through the loop to hang to a tree.

Or, bend the wire into any shape you like.

younger kids: Make a loop at one end of the pipe cleaner, and twist to secure. Thread the pipe cleaner with cheerios. Loop and twist the other end to secure. Thread a piece of yarn through the loop and hang from a tree.

8 sweet treats for Earth Day

earth day roundup

In honor of Earth Day, this post is dedicated to things that grow. And it’s sort of ridiculous that I post about things that grow when in real life I can’t make ANYTHING grow. It’s terribly sad, actually, how horrible I am at getting things to grow. I want to be good at it. You’d think it’d be easy. Plant a seed. Add water and sun. Stuff grows. But for me, I just don’t know. How do you plant the seed? On top, under the dirt? How much water? How much sun? It’s like the plant knows what I’m capable of and hides in the seed. Or, should it emerge, it will wither as I walk by.

So I stick with decorating sweets that look like things that grow. I do understand, mind you, that this doesn’t help the earth at all. But perhaps it will comfort you to know that we (encouraged by my husband, admittedly) do our part to help the earth. HE grows food in our backyard. We have solar panels. We waste as little as possible (he’s also better at this than I am). We recycle everything that can be recycled. I don’t use hairspray.

Here is a roundup of “stuff that grows”and other goodies for Earth Day from my archives.
